Fiona McLeod, the minister for children and young people, met volunteers and staff at Young Scot to celebrate Volunteer Week and announce that Young Scot has received accreditation from the Volunteer Scotland Investing in Volunteers programme.

Investing in Volunteers awards accreditation to organisations that have demonstrated exceptional standards in the management and development of volunteers.

Young Scot volunteers have provided over 10,000 hours of support across a number of different projects, including Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, Youth Arts Voice Scotland and the Junior Climate Challenge Fund.

Volunteer Scotland commended Young Scot’s outstanding volunteer programmes which result in an enhanced volunteer experience, equipping them with the skills they need to succeed.

Volunteering is a great way for young people to try something new, and allows them to develop skills and experience that will help them succeed in life - Fiona McLeod

As part of Volunteer Week, Young Scot is highlighting the hard work of young volunteers who support national or local projects across Scotland. Over 45% of young Scots are volunteers and it is estimated 86% of volunteering in Scotland takes place in local communities.

Fiona McLeod, Minister for Children and Young People, said: “I was delighted to meet Young Scot volunteers who are giving up their time to work across various projects which have made a real difference in communities both locally and nationally. Volunteer Week is an opportunity to thank them and volunteers across Scotland for the work they are doing to transform and improve lives.

"Volunteering is a great way for young people to try something new, and allows them to develop skills and experience that will help them succeed in life. I’d also like to congratulate Young Scot for receiving their Investing in Volunteers accreditation.”

Louise Macdonald, Chief Executive of Young Scot, said: “Volunteers are integral to the work we do at Young Scot. I’m proud that we can give them something back – whether it’s training, new skills or the opportunity to try something different. We know that investing time and support in volunteers is essential to making the most of their involvement and ensuring volunteering with Young Scot is a rewarding experience.

“Young volunteers are making an inspiring contribution to their communities every day and their work is changing lives for the better across Scotland. We look forward to supporting even more fantastic young volunteers in the future.
