Should employers be required to provide vegan meals?

This poll is over 5 years old

The Scottish Government is being urged to bring in a new law that would require all public bodies to serve up vegan options in their canteens.

The Vegan Society and Go Vegan Scotland have urged ministers to introduce legislation to guarantee plant-based options on every public sector menu every day.

The charities claim that as well as protecting the rights of vegans, it would also benefit public health, the environment and animals.

But should employers have to provide meals for those who choose not to eat meat and dairy products.

We are asking: should employers be required to serve up vegan meal options for their staff?

Everyone can eat a vegan option. If in doubt it's usually an option for people keeping kosher or halal. It will always be a vegetarian option too (vegetarians don't actually have to eat cheese for every meal despite what most cafeterias seem to think ...). And it should work for anyone lactose intolerant. So why not?

Surely a vegan option is the best possible option from a catering point of view - anyone can eat it! It's really really easy to make tasty nutritious vegan meals - surely the caterer could provide meaty/dairy add-ons for those who insist on asserting their 'right' to eat meat - eg a bowl of lovely dahl and rice (vegan) come with the option to add a chicken drumstick or 3 or some paneer cheese for those who want it... voila! everyone catered for

Of course this about equality and fairness for all to access nutritious food. I have shifted from meat eater to a more plant-based diet, and good vegan food is full of flavour and filling. I have been at a lunch meeting where the vegan option was twice the size of the meat portion and looked far more appetising.
