PETA launches bizarre publicity stunt competition in UK and Ireland

Have you ever wondered who the hottest vegan in the UK and Ireland is?

Probably not, but animal rights campaign group PETA has launched a competition to come up with an answer in any case.

The controversial group – which last year proposed plastering Scotland’s ambulances with saucy adverts featuring a sexy nurse and the slogan "Lighten Your Load, Go Vegan” – says entrants will be judged on their enthusiasm for promoting vegan living and their attractiveness before finalists are selected for a public vote.

In promotional material – which doesn't really make it any clearer why the competition is being organised – the campaign group describes celebrities Ellie Goulding, Natalie Portman, Jared Leto, David Haye and Joaquin Phoenix as “hot vegans”.

Winners – one man and one woman – will each receive a one night stay for two at a London hotel with breakfast and dinner thrown in – presumably meat, eggs and dairy foods are off the menu.

Launching the competition PETA director Mimi Bekhechi claimed: "Vegans are, on average, slimmer and healthier and have more energy than their meat-eating peers – plus there's nothing sexier than compassion.

"Everyone who enters this contest is already a winner for eating delicious, healthy foods that didn't harm a hair, feather or fin on an animal's body."

Entrants must be at least 18 years of age and can enter online at peta.org.uk.

It's a great idea. Finding good-looking spokespeople for the cause who aren't celebrities but "real" people with real-life experiences, who are easy to relate to and may have had health benefits from going vegan, lost weight or similar, seems like a good way of inspiring others to make the choice to go vegan. Can't wait to see the winners!
