Linda Norgrove died after being kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2010

A charity founded in memory of a Scottish aid worker killed in Afghanistan is holding a series of fundraising events to mark the tenth anniversary of her death.

Linda Norgrove, from Lewis, was kidnapped in September 2010 and died during a rescue attempt a month later.

Her parents later set up a charity, The Linda Norgrove Foundation, to support projects helping woman and girls in Afghanistan.

In the ten years since Linda’s death, the foundation has raised more than £1.5 million and funded over 80 grassroots projects across the country including schools, safe transport schemes and vocational training.

In normal years, the foundation holds an annual 10k run to raise funds. But with social distancing rules in place this year, supporters are being asked to take part in their own mini-fundraisers for the charity.

Anyone wishing to participate is asked to run, walk or cycle during 10 days of fundraising in October. All donations will help pay tuition fees for Afghan women studying to become doctors.

Linda’s mother Lorna said this year's fundraising effort had been changed so it could comply with Covid-19 restrictions.

She said: "Every year since Linda's death we have held the 10k and have been touched by the number of people joining in from different corners of the world in friendship and recognition of Linda's adventurous nature.

"This year, we're going virtual.

"She was a very active person so this is a fitting tribute to her, particularly as it helps fund causes which were so close to her heart."
