Research and care charity Breast Cancer Now has appointed Dr Tom Berry as its new head of Scotland.

A former breast cancer surgeon, Dr Berry joins the charity from NHS Scotland, having previously held several non-executive roles within the voluntary sector including a spell on the board of Medics Against Violence.

Dr Berry is currently chair of Volunteer Glasgow and has also occupied a number of significant posts with the British Medical Association.

His new role will see him lead the development of the charity’s award-winning face-to-face services, working in partnership with the NHS, voluntary and statutory organisations across Scotland.

He will also play a key role in external engagement and policy work in Scotland to address issues and affect change in breast cancer prevention, early detection and diagnosis, and the equality of access to treatments.

Welcoming the appointment, Breast Cancer Now chief executive Baroness Delyth Morgan said: “We are delighted to welcome Tom as the charity’s new head of Scotland. His practical knowledge and expertise as a breast surgeon, combined with a wealth of experience in the health and third sectors, will be a real asset to the organisation.”

Dr Berry said he was “honoured” to accept the role.

“I am passionate about ensuring excellent care and support for people affected by breast cancer,” he added.

“This role presents an exciting opportunity to help to deliver even more progress for those living with the disease in Scotland.

“Breast cancer is a truly devastating disease and is still impacting the lives of too many across Scotland. I am proud to be joining a charity which is having such a positive impact on the lives of all those affected - providing vital support for today, and much-needed hope for the future.”
