Kingdom Housing Association has won a coveted Green Apple Award.

A Fife housing association has won a coveted award for its commitment to sustainability.

Kingdom Housing Association scooped the Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice at a ceremony in the Palace of Westminster on Monday.

The association was behind the first social rented house in the UK to achieve Passivhaus accreditation, and includes solar panels, grey water re-use, sun-stores and passive heat transfers in many of its properties.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions, these measures also help tenants keep their energy costs down.

Kingdom Group chief executive Bill Banks said: “Winning a coveted Green Apple Award reflects the huge effort everyone at Kingdom makes to environmental best practice. Kingdom promotes a culture focused on educating, training and motivating staff to conduct their activities in a sustainable manner which benefits the environment, our tenants and the sector as a whole.

“We are very proud of the environmental standards we incorporate into our housing, however sustainability extends much further than the physical build and this award recognises the work we have been doing across the organisation to recognise sustainability principles in everything we do.”

The Green Apple Environment Awards were established in 1994 as an annual campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The scheme was one of the first to be accredited by the RSA as an official feeder scheme into the European Business Awards for the Environment, and is still one of only a handful of accredited campaigns.
