Former first lady was guest of honour at Hunter Foundation dinner

Michelle Obama said she wants a safer world for girls to grow up in at a charity event last night in Edinburgh.

The former US first lady said many places were unsafe for girls and that she wanted everyone to grow up equally.

Speaking at the Hunter Foundation event at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, Obama was joined by 900 guests including Judy Murray, Mark Beaumont and Beverley Knight.

Later during a question and answer session Obama ruled herself out standing for president in the future.

Instead she will allow others to have their chance she said.

“I’ll do as much as ever outside of politics. Leaders have to know when to get out of the way for the next generation.

“We have lived in a bubble for the past eight years. We need to believe in the next generation.”

Barack Obama visited Scotland in May last year for a similar event with the foundation.

A table for 10 cost £5,000 with all proceeds going to the Scottish charities including CHAS, the Maggie’s Centres and CLIC Sargent.

Donations will also be made to the Obama Foundation.
